[00:00:30] Okay, welcome back to a brand new season of The Outer Reels. I'm Sam, my wonderful friend, host with me, Jason. Wait, brand new season? Jason Kuznicki Well, about that. Oh, this is you explaining why, number one, this is not a good movie, and number two, this is not a post-apocalyptic movie. Jason Kuznicki Yeah, so I think I can argue this still. Jason Kuznicki No, Dystopia is not post-apocalyptic, Sam.
[00:00:59] We've had this conversation. Jason Kuznicki We've had this conversation before. Jason Kuznicki I know, but we've done so many, I don't care. Jason Kuznicki There is a quarry in this. Jason Kuznicki There is a quarry in this film. Jason Kuznicki There is. Jason Kuznicki Yes. Jason Kuznicki And I would refer to it as a surprise quarry, because they don't ever go... Jason Kuznicki Well, they're driving around a fully intact downtown Los Angeles. Jason Kuznicki Yep. Jason Kuznicki And then suddenly there's a quarry.
[00:01:30] Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki And I mean, I know I haven't spent much time in Los Angeles in the last few years, Jason Kuznicki Although you and I were there in downtown LA back at the beginning of November together. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki And I do not remember a quarry. Jason Kuznicki No, not at all. Jason Kuznicki You know what? Jason Kuznicki And I'll give them credit for this. Jason Kuznicki They cut it almost well enough where you kind of buy it. Jason Kuznicki Like the way that it's cut together. Jason Kuznicki Almost.
[00:01:56] Jason Kuznicki The short version of it is there's a car chase and they're under a bridge in LA, the famous bridge. Jason Kuznicki There's a lot of action scenes and stuff filmed there. Jason Kuznicki And the car of goons gets rear ended by Carradine and they go off a cliff like total dual style. Jason Kuznicki You might want to tell everyone what we're watching and the fact that it does star David Carradine. Jason Kuznicki You're right. Jason Kuznicki Let's go back a little bit. Jason Kuznicki But this, damn it, this movie has a quarry.
[00:02:23] Jason Kuznicki So it's post apocalyptic because as far as I'm concerned, the only qualifying factor we've come up with through the common thread through all of these movies is that somehow there's a quarry involved. Jason Kuznicki That's not quite the case, but sure. Jason Kuznicki Sure, Sam. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki This movie, I did come across it. Jason Kuznicki I was like, hey, this could be really good. Jason Kuznicki No, no, it wasn't. Jason Kuznicki Well, that's true. Jason Kuznicki It definitely wasn't.
[00:02:52] Jason Kuznicki This is borderline champagne and bullets. Jason Kuznicki You know, without the goodness though, like without the stuff that makes you go, this is amazing. Jason Kuznicki Yeah, Carradine, who is admittedly phoning it in, is the only thing that slightly elevates this movie. Jason Kuznicki As he always does. Jason Kuznicki And finally, to answer your question, yes, tonight we are watching Future Force from 1989. Jason Kuznicki Jason Kuznicki Jason's already given his feedback on what it is, but how do you do it?
[00:03:22] Jason Kuznicki You sell it then? Jason Kuznicki What is this movie? Jason Kuznicki This is Half Asleep David Carradine plays a, I guess, let me start, go back a bit. Jason Kuznicki In the very near future, this is 89 and it takes place in what, 92? Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki It might even be 91, it's early. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki Very, very near future. Jason Kuznicki There are no police officers anymore.
[00:03:47] Jason Kuznicki All cops basically are bounty hunters sanctioned by the state, I guess, but by a corporation. Jason Kuznicki It's privatized policing. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki Actually, I'm glad you mentioned that, Jason, because it stands for- Jason Kuznicki I already have it up if you need it. Jason Kuznicki Yeah. Jason Kuznicki The theme song for that, and we've talked about this, is that I think we had an overlap where there was a composer on a movie we covered was involved with that show that cops cartoon as a
[00:04:44] gold standard for cartoon intros and music i think that is one of the best made intros like not just oh like it's fun for kids to watch and it's exciting it does such a great job at introducing all the characters and telling you what they do and who they are and how they work and you can just jump into any episode and know know the deal you know or know the uh know the spread i should say so here's the thing like um and and that cops by the way is fighting crime in a future time
[00:05:13] but um what's funny is that there's like a decade age difference between sam and i and sam was like the prime age for this cartoon i was not yet somehow i still know it and i don't really know why because it's like from 1988 like i was like 16 17 i'm actually kind of surprised for that reason that you brought it up because i know we've talked about it in the past but i know also for a fact that this
[00:05:41] wouldn't have been your jam growing up but no it stood out among the others because it's still it's a really good show i always loved animation so i guess i was just always kind of tangentially aware of a lot of the stuff going on i know i've seen pieces of it but i think it would be like i'd be flipping channels and watch it for four or five minutes and then continue on kind of thing but and i remember there are toys around it too but i don't remember yeah i don't think i don't know if the toys ever
[00:06:09] made it to australia or not but the animation seemed like it was a higher i mean at the time the animation seemed more appealing than a lot of the stuff that was going on and in retrospect the animation is extremely good now that i'm adult when i look at it like compared to other stuff from around the era it's just a very well-made looking show and again the score the music is
[00:06:30] amazing it's such a great intro yeah that said but i said this movie is not no it's not like during that car chasing that we're talking about where uh which ends with the bad guys going off into a quarry bad guys by the way who are just um like carradine happens to drive by and they're like there he is and they just chase so some somehow they know who he is what he is where he is what he's doing
[00:06:57] um which they shouldn't there's no reason why they should but they just chase after him and start shooting the back of his car well the the coal's going out in i guess i thought this buddy had stopped it but uh but anyway need to hear my point was there is a song playing over over that god yes thank you that is just it's like um 80s uh elevator rock i can make you the best way i can describe it
[00:07:25] like i wrote shootout over soft rock was my i called it soft rock it's not good yeah no and it yes it's definitely kind of a soft rock but it's like uh it's like a music version of soft rock too like it's it's not it's it would be it would be ai nowadays like yeah except that's giving a that would be downplaying how you know yeah ai is better than that that would be insulting ai music yeah
[00:07:52] because music tends to be better well just sadly without jumping too far ahead that that shootout that goes under the bridge i we should describe it because it kind of states how this whole movie plays out and there's two cars and they're driving along side by side and the concrete pillars are washing down between them and they're shooting at each other but they're just it's just a shot of carotene firing out his jeep and then a shot of the bad guy firing the shotgun and back and forth
[00:08:22] there's no intercut shots inside the car of reactions like people worried people getting hit people getting stressed no and that works for three or four back and forths but there must be like two dozen of these so you set up this scene and you don't the sequence is like five or six minutes long yeah and you don't expand on it you don't get any other shots inside the car you don't know what people what's going through each other's head like you don't know if what if the bad guys think
[00:08:52] they've got the one up or carotene stressed or the vice versa like there's nothing it's just the both of them with no dial like hanging out the way that it jumps from scene to scene does make it feel okay paced like you're like okay we're moving along but at the cost of losing everything about the characters and the story and everything else and you you can't have both like i mean you you can you
[00:09:18] can have a fast-paced movie with it but it's few and far between but in these kind of movies you get one or the other and this movie is definitely the other right um yep so for how i'd sell this movie i said it's blade runner but you get 18 in a camcorder is basically what it is but yeah well i mean i'm not exaggerating when i say it it's of the roughly of the same caliber of champagne and bullets like
[00:09:45] it was surprising to see carotene in something this low budget yeah because when you look explains why he's basically just phoning it in he's sleepwalking through this but he's always phoning it in that was kind of my joke in crime zone like it just looks like he showed up on a sunday doing a favor and it's his character like he crime zone just it's kind of the same thing but he still is again he's just
[00:10:11] he's just not being utilized here he's capable but yeah it's funny though too because the sequel there is a sequel to this it came out a year later i'm sure you'll get to it but that's called future zone so i'm just like yes you get get away from the zone movies and future zone is incredible because it's a time travel movie that goes back to the 70s and it's played by his son oh nice yes i found this out because i was confused when i was looking up the blu-ray and it comes with future force one and two
[00:10:38] it's only a german release and then i was like what is future force two and of course it's actually called future zone and it's a time travel we'll get there but that's a that's a whole other thing to unpack yeah oh you're gonna watch future future zone right yeah i imagine that that's gonna be your pick next week so i just figured that out it is something i would do but but it's not so don't worry about it because i'm sticking with theme right so i did write down as this or my basic pitch for
[00:11:07] this was david carradine shows up on set to work on his third film for the day he has no idea what's going on they preface his showing up with hey like think of robocop's inner corporate politics but not nearly as good and then i just picture the director walking up and saying here put this on and they hand him a power glove yeah that's it i was gonna say he's got he's got robocop's arm
[00:11:34] that's it oh my goodness that that does that wow does that arm take a turn later in the movie the whole movie is worth that scene i'll tell you that for me it it just i did laugh out loud with glee when that happened because that was like that was so unexpected except it is slightly foreshadowed because billy the the kid on the the tech dweeb mentions hey how'd the remote work
[00:12:00] and carradine's like i haven't tried it yet and i'm like oh so we're gonna try it's one line it's such a no no no no i do remember him talking about it now but it was just like he says yeah it's like too much for me or something like that or it could have yeah yeah exactly i'm too old yeah exactly he's like i'm gonna go up with that but anyway uh this movie though very importantly enough we need to discuss
[00:12:25] this this is directed by mr david a prior welcome back once again probably still most notably known for deadly prey from 1987 starring ted briar of course uh however like top billing for this movie none other than cameron mitchell once once again who's like fast appearing more than william smith in our shows we've seen but among all of that the reason is is that david a prior films we can talk about
[00:12:54] is action international pictures or aip right and without mentioning the one that started this entire season 1990s the final sanction so all the way back in complete full circle but you know what you're getting into when you get an aip move and you know what you're getting into when you get a david prior so all of that said knowing this and you basically have to compare this to final
[00:13:21] sanction right now this isn't too bad on the scheme of david a prior i suppose not this this is um marginally better than final sanction for sure and it's one year earlier yeah yeah well you had a bit more money i'm assuming for this one yeah so his final sanction should have been a big movie and what was it not the hardest part for me about this is that the same time this movie was being made
[00:13:46] tango and cash is being made so it's like there's there's an expectation gap there that is so much out of both both in los angeles although i'm fairly confident this one was shooting without permits oh yeah there's no doubt at all yeah um of course this movie starring david carradine as we mentioned and he plays what i refer to as some kind of cop because that's kind of how it's set
[00:14:15] up they're basically bounty hunters at this you know it's really what they are yep yeah soldiers of computer tells them what to go who to go get and how much they get paid cops of fortune i could say there there is an element to this movie where a thing gets posted on a billboard and they all work out of the same office and or yeah presumably this one presumably there's many more but this movie's focused around this one so it has a little bit of a john wick type thing where these these bulletins
[00:14:43] come up and it's just open season on anybody for this reward system is basically how it is and i think the idea they don't really go into it in the movie but i think the way it plays out in the film is that crime just runs rampant but if you've got enough money and you don't want a certain type of criminal you can just post it and they'll take that person out so if somebody robs your store or somebody does something you know tanks your company whatever it is it's at a more corporate
[00:15:12] level where a regular street thug would probably never get put on the board because the people he's interacting with could never afford to post for it would be how i would understand it so it's like a corporatized it's a it's a corporatized yeah cops and the cops are basically bounty hunters they get um there's there's a nice little uh led well one of those sort of red message boards like a ticker yeah like yeah the words go across on the ticker and it tells you uh who who it is that's
[00:15:42] wanted and how much they'll pay for it and what they're guilty of and caridine gives a nice little speech at the beginning where he's going to pick some guy up and says you're you're guilty until proven innocent and uh basically you have the right to death and uh if you don't then if you if you you know forfeit that right then you can come with me and you'll get due process pretty much yeah it's like okay that's how the whole system works um also in the credits i want to call out a couple of things
[00:16:12] as the opening happens mark mancina is in this and i was like wow and so he's got too many credits to really talk about he's he's listed on the composer right but everything from money train assassins all the bad boys films speed cliffhanger days of thunder like these are these are the teenager movies where i just watched every movie read every credit and it kept showing up and so um it was kind of interesting
[00:16:40] because we talked last week about space mutiny probably coming soon and he's also the composer on that so nice yeah so it just ever everything's falling into place for this the other thing again back on aip action international pictures this is again a film from these guys and i i won't call it a studio but i i think aip who i like to refer to is like just a direct-to-video factory at this
[00:17:07] point like they just crank these things out there's no actual production involved in this and so with that no it is here it is it is action international pictures presents as it said in the credits future force so welcome back to aip we do get a prologue and lucky for you i did oh i was worried post-amocalyptic movies always have prologues this movie had a prologue and a quarry we're we're
[00:17:34] we're closing in on the possibility of this being stop you're not you're right i agree in the year 1991 crime in america was out of control prisons are overloaded police are short-staffed the cities have become the battlefield of the future and the criminals have won the war the government was forced to shut down the police department and the police became privatized crime was under control
[00:18:00] the price however justice would now cease to exist so they kind of tell you the idea that cops just aren't arresting anybody they're only arresting high-profile cases of people who are willing to put the cash up for which in itself isn't a bad idea because that could create a really interesting dynamic in crime where blue-collar crime like street-level crime just basically goes
[00:18:25] runs rampant because the people who are the victims of it can't afford to pay for right the police to catch them which is a cool idea it'd be neat if it was explored here yeah exactly cool idea just not in this movie exactly yeah but the opening scene is a couple of thugs outside of a warehouse and tucker
[00:18:49] who is uh david carron he shows up and i gotta laugh he just casually saunters over in a like sleeveless denim vest and he's got a six shooter on his hip and he just quick draws on this guy and blasts him and then i think they're setting it up like hey he's he's a pretty fast gun hand on this thing because he yeah i guess so there's three of them and he wants the middle guy and the other two kind of clear out
[00:19:14] and after he kills the middle guy the other two come back and they're like you're dead meat we're gonna kill you cop and um yeah it's i don't know really quite what happens but it ends with with them in their car trying to run down carotene but in the meantime he's put on a he's put on a power glove um because nintendo has the power and um he he grabs hold of the top of the car and it stops it from
[00:19:43] driving anywhere which is not how physics work this was a crazy moment i i actually went back to make sure he only pulled a glove out of that box and he didn't pull like boots or something no he is just standing there they're trying to make a getaway and the guy is just got the thing on the wood and it's smoking the tires and it pans up he's like we're not getting away and carotene has his right
[00:20:09] hand and his fingers into the rooftop of this car just holding it still like it's it's so preposterous i was like this movie is going to be awesome now with what happens with the glove later i could almost buy what happens with the car now but without knowing that i'm just like uh how does that work because then i thought well maybe if he's wearing boots and i'm like no because then he'd get torn in
[00:20:33] half it's like yeah or stay or a joint would come out or something right like it's just this is not how it works no it's definitely not and i don't even think that conversation was had or it was just like it's not how it works but it doesn't matter yeah and but essentially he stops them for fleeing and then he's like i'm gonna go back to my truck he's gonna book them or something he's like don't you guys move and then they of course turn around while he's like walks back to his truck and they're like
[00:21:02] let's get him he's dead meat and then they try and run him over and then he just turns around and just shoots a laser out of the glove at him and just vaporizes the car yeah it's it's just like it it's a power it's it's yeah i mean it's a magic glove i guess because it just does whatever it needs to when when it needs to yeah and why are you using this through the entire rest of the movie because we don't see the glove again for a long time yes thank you for mentioning that that that is
[00:21:30] the shortest fall of this movie as with a lot of these things when you have a really op gadget and you're like well why didn't you just use it here or why didn't you use it there like gears of war always did that really well with the hammer of dawn which is like the most powerful gun in the game yep but all they simply would do over the radio be like hey you're inside there's no satellite link or hey the hammer's offline like it's not working right now whatever like because otherwise you're like why could we just use the hammer of dawn through
[00:21:58] everything this movie doesn't even try that it's just he chooses not to get it out of the back of his jeep like there's there's no yeah and and unlike the equalizer 2000 no one else seems to care about it yes thank you this is exactly the same case as the gun and equalizer 2000 it's this super weapon but at least in this movie we kind of get an idea that it came from this whiz kid
[00:22:23] who we're about to meet but still it's just when you use it when don't you use it it's uh yeah it makes it weird but speaking of that so makes it weird that that sums up most of what we do yeah that's true and so he gets back in the car and now he's driving back to the office or doing whatever
[00:22:47] and there's a video call that comes in in his jeep and it's this kid named billy with glosses it's pretty quickly you catch i do want to point out it's awesome that his because he's got what like uh what's that like an 86 cherokee or something that he's driving yeah it's like an old wagon here or something yeah yeah and it's got a it's got a video phone in it because it's like so impressed that you think three years from now from what this movie is going to be made cars are going to have
[00:23:16] video phones in them but it's still put in on like a little portable black and white amfm like tv it's an existing product and then they've just like comp the shot in there but so this kid called billy he's wearing lab coat he's got glasses his typical egghead he's talking to tucker david carradine about like his next job and his next hit and he says i'll have the glove work and tucker's like it's
[00:23:43] fine but he's like did you try the remote yet tucker's like as you said he's like i'm too old for that stuff we don't we forget about it for the next hour we have no idea that or the next hour and 20 minutes but there is a reason they talk about it but it's learned clearly this kid tucker this kid billy is helping tucker out and finding jobs for him and doing whatever he's got to do he's he's like
[00:24:08] his inner monologue because it gives tucker a way to talk about what's happening essentially and and meanwhile billy's like hacking into things for him and stuff so like when he has to go after the news the reporter he locks everyone else out of it so that only billy or only tucker knows about it so he can get a head start kind of thing yeah classic 90s hacker sidekick yes and and classic 80s hacker
[00:24:34] graphics too yes oh totally i love when he was trying to hack into something later and he's just trying like passwords and it's like a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a i guess g worked because he got in yeah and it's like you know programs could do that for you like you know yeah it's like it should just be running through them um because no one really know about brute forcing
[00:25:01] something back then you wouldn't have gotten locked out after three attempts i do think that the computer graphics in this are better since we're talking about charity movies and computer graphics are better than the infographics that were in crime zone which were clearly just animated on a mac like you can see the window and everything because it's like the camera is redrawing the action and it's so
[00:25:25] dumbly animated in there i don't know how else to explain i think empire of ash still wins the award for the dumbest computer graphics and that guy who did that i wish i could remember his name because it'd be amazing if i was able to just pull that out but the guy who did the computer graphics on empire of ash 3 got a single roll credit on that damn movie at the head and it was like computer graphics buy which is pretty incredible yeah i'm looking them up now of course you are although
[00:25:54] i'm going to think back on it like last starfighters 84 so which was like full on cg which was insane for its day but um last starfighter had something that all of these movies we watched don't which is money well that's true and and i love last starfighter and i remember being like really impressed with its animation at the time yeah and of course it doesn't at all hold up but um i still love that movie
[00:26:21] it's a great movie such a great vibe though that whole first 15 minutes of him in the trailer probably i love that the way it's lit the way it's look it just feels so great yeah yeah uh but things that don't feel great is this movie however there is a moment now where we get intro to our major bad guys and goons and i do want to talk about that because we meet our thugs and wow one of them is robert tessier
[00:26:49] and i saw his big round head and immediately he's like holy crap i was so pleasantly surprised to see him so he is one of the original founders of stunts unlimited which was the oh okay which was the hal needham stunt trope that was invented in the 70s right so this guy goes back a long way but the reason that he's part of that it was why because he shows up in a bunch of burt reynolds movies and that's
[00:27:16] why i immediately know his face so well uh he was um in the tom laughlin born losers is a biker in that from like 67 and kind of type costume but most of his work was stunt stunt work but i knew him straight away because he's in the longest yard he's in hooper and of course he's in cannonball run he plays the biker at the end of like the main biker in the biker fight scene and that his largest probably
[00:27:43] like screen fame i think he's with charles bronson in um hard times and he's a street fighter and he's like head butting everybody and that's like his like move right so but he's like a big guy and he just he's a stunt guy who always got a little bit of work but i i think burt and how really liked him so he always showed up in those movies there you go but so more of a stunt man than an actor and uh
[00:28:08] well he's he's not much of an actor well although i shouldn't say that because i don't think anybody is much of an actor in this movie and i don't know if that's his fault no and and in the other movies he's he he can be scary and he can be charming and but he he's a very memorable face he he's also a really accomplished carpenter and uh everybody just said he was a super sweet person he would make really nice like ornate furniture for all the people he worked with like actors like he made this
[00:28:38] like big coffee table for burt reynolds and stuff as a gift and like just like a really just wholesome human being on on around everything way but after seeing this movie i was like wow this is some of the most screen time i've ever seen him in because when he first showed up i was like oh he's just going to in and out like usual he becomes kind of the main thug in the whole movie and he does and and he keeps coming back because for whatever reason robert or robert carrie david carrie
[00:29:05] doesn't take him out properly no and and it's just like dude when are you gonna actually finally kill this guy because he just keeps coming back he's kind of terminator at this point he does make a few of those terminator returns but he was also in a chain in a run of midas muffler commercials that had lee van cleef in him and george kennedy and all that stuff and if you look those up i watched a bunch of those today and i was like oh man like i missed this whole thing because it didn't air but
[00:29:33] those were all canadian productions which i didn't know yeah and well i i remember the because you said a couple to me and i'm like oh yeah okay i don't know if i remember necessarily lee van cleef from him i do remember sort of the tone and the theme and uh um what was what they call them right top gun at midas that's what it was and uh yeah so i remember that that thread but having just re-watched it and realized i see him in the background now which i didn't catch when i re-watched
[00:30:01] him earlier today so it's yeah it was funny that that opened a whole wormhole for me because i've not ever seen we never had those commercials in australia so i was like lee van cleef and george kennedy selling mufflers this is an amazing time no they're like it's like a service a chain of service shops but they specialize in like yeah it was muffler replacement yeah i still yeah i still see mitos around on the roads and stuff but just oh there you go the fact that it was yeah lee van cleef
[00:30:30] and george kennedy slinging this is just that seems so above them as far as like pay grade and everything else but it was the 80s those things would have been i was gonna say they were late 70s early 80s yeah that was a whole different ball game back then so anyway yeah uh robert tessier is playing becker and he's going to be our main goon our main enemy so tucker goes back to our
[00:30:55] cops facility as you mentioned what it stood for what does it stand for again it stands for civilian operated police systems right and i love this part because tucker walks in and i just want to point out though i think at the beginning of the show they say it's it they say it stands for something else like it's really an operated police but i don't i think they give a different word than something that's s for systems like i think they say something something else right at the beginning
[00:31:21] like when they're doing the voiceover oh yeah um yeah i can't remember what it is now but i just remember going that's not what cops that doesn't spell cops that smells like cops with it and it's like a v or something like i don't know i can't be bothered to go back and find out so i like it because tucker caradine walks in and everybody's just kind of laying about and they're all wearing sleeveless denim vests and there's like guns everybody's drinking and they're just kind of laying around we should
[00:31:47] set set the stage for this this looks like um your third tier real estate agent office circa 1984 yeah it's like you know and there's it's just like an office of the door and blinds on the windows that are kind of askew and and the cop sign is a vinyl banner attached to the outside too like it's clearly just depressed that they managed to get one up on top and then they put a sign on the
[00:32:15] doors too but it's like yeah because i would have like if the way the rest of this movie looks i would not have expected to see the banner above the door just a little one on there yeah yeah they tried there at least yeah i was just laughing because they're all sort of they're all sort of like roughhousing each other and they're riding up kill counts on chalkboards and there's all this stuff and everybody's like drinking and stuff it's like everybody in here looks like they just got back
[00:32:40] from a monster truck rally like these are my people like i was like this looks awesome this looks like a great place to hang out and then tucker's tech dweeb buddy billy tells him about there's a new bounty and it's a hundred thousand dollars and then the board lights up for a hundred thousand dollars and everybody in the office is like whoa that's a lot of money and tucker just hits the road immediately for this bounty and obviously everybody else are going to be interested in it this is the end of
[00:33:09] the first act this is 28 minutes of the movie so it's yeah taking a while to actually get going to where we're going to get going like the whole point of the movie which is him to basically meet up with this reporter chick yeah and so the he tracks down this reporter chick she doesn't want anything to do with him so he just power glove he puts on his power glove and just like rips through a door well he's supposed to arrest her she's been charged with treason and like he goes through his whole
[00:33:38] spiel and then she goes and she like drops her she's got a bunch of file folders and i guess she's in the parkade of the police station she throws it on the ground and then runs it through this door that apparently is just like a square cinder blocks room with nothing else in it and going nowhere else yeah and so she's she's just trying to hold the door there hold the latch of the door so he can't get
[00:34:02] in it's like oh my dear he's obviously way stronger than you you you barely look like you could hold on to those file folders you had good thing he's got a power glove in the trunk of his jeep yeah so he gets the he goes women and then he goes and gets the power glove and then smashes it through the door and tears the door off but you gotta remember this is david caradine and i i hate to say this
[00:34:26] word because i don't believe anybody's ever passed their prime but he is past his prime and i even feel bad and insulting to say that but he just seems unbelievable as the human being he's doing this action right now on top of the fact that once again i think he's a fantastic actor i just think he's very poorly directed feels like he just showed up on his third shift for a different movie because he's just phoning it in but there he is tearing this door down and there's a there's a combination
[00:34:56] of that dynamic that's extremely entertaining to me i was just giggling the whole time because i'm like i don't believe this from anybody's perspective yeah no it was it's quite funny so he gets her back out and then like two of the other cops show up and they're like he's like you guys are too late and you're like no she's coming with us and because because she's you know they want to just kill her outright and because then they get paid and he's like no she she waived that right she's she's going in
[00:35:23] and they're like nope and then you know hijinks ensue well it's important that you mention that because that is his character moment and that's what drives his character through this whole thing is that he's still by the book and as outlaw and crazy as this group of people these bounty hunter cops seem to be he still always plays it by the book and well and this is where a better movie would have given him some backstory where you find out he's actually a cop or he was military yeah he was
[00:35:52] lapd do you get his backstory oh we did but he was it's it's a one line but he was lapd yeah i 20 years prior no right but so exactly what you're saying though a real backstory would be important here to hear more about it but but wait wait a minute he's lapd 20 years earlier but the this this sort of whole thing's only been around for like three or four years he might actually say i was
[00:36:17] lapd for 20 years or 20 years ago okay but yeah yeah okay but still yeah exactly yeah and so you realize that at this moment the cops are going to do anything they can whether it means killing him and her to get the money and at this point in time i was like oh this movie i know where this movie is going now because i really wasn't sure what the major like core story was going to be oh and i was
[00:36:43] like oh it's over half an hour to get to it yeah and then i was like oh this is just the gauntlet with eastwood and sandra lock from 77 because it's that's it he's a cop he's got to escort her as a witness and then everybody's out to get her because they don't want her to testify and everybody's in it the mob the bikers because all the money and that's kind of what this is that movie set up and executed a lot
[00:37:06] better but i had it but i had a familiar thing and i was yeah i know but i was like oh okay like this is kind of a like this is always a fun story we've heard it and seen it before this isn't the best gauntlet is not the first to do it it's um and it's it's been done better since this movie too yeah but um yeah but yeah it's fine i felt i felt comfortable because i was like oh i'm in for this
[00:37:33] ride but there is a moment here where the two cops get killed trying to attack him and then there's a third and then they have a quick draw between him and caridine and caridine quick draws but he's wearing the power glove and so it's important to be thinking that we've learned the power glove has lasers on it and it can blow up cars and do all this sort of stuff with with the terrible shot apparently too because the first shot like goes way over these guys heads that's true well maybe
[00:38:01] that's maybe that's the point of this because he gets in has to do a quick draw like the old west and he's holding his power glove over his gun and i'm like why would you even do that you have a laser in your hand like yeah i know it's so dumb i was also like maybe it gives him quicker i i don't know no yeah if you're stretching you're you're doing work the movie couldn't be bothered to do which is never a good thing that's true yeah so the word is out the goons are after tucker and his girl and now
[00:38:30] it's the john wick open season where everybody wants them and thus begins our car chase because they're driving along and they get ambushed by a car our six minute shootout scene with the horrible soft rock and which it's so bad because it's again there's there's no dynamic it's the same shots over and over again but where we started talking about this it ends where caridine comes up behind them
[00:38:59] and rams them and remember they're under this bridge in la carrot caridine drops like a smoke grenade he does yeah which which you know again this is this is not how these things work because it basically creates a giant cloud that these guys can't see anymore and they quickly immediately stop and now they're on the edge of a cliff over the quarry which um downtown los angeles so i guess downtown la now
[00:39:25] has a quarry um and it's like and then caridine shows up and pushes them over the edge and the way it's shot you're just like why is this happening and their car goes off the cliff and explodes and then we get a pov shot on to their credit they actually did drop a car that's not a model no that's true yeah that was that was an okay moment but like i said they pulled this off because we cut
[00:39:53] to a shot where the camera's mounted on the hood and it's looking into the front windshield and you see caridine look over shoulder and reverse back as if he's reversing away from the cliff and they intercut a shot of his bumper over the cliff and pulling back and we're magically under the bridge in la again it doesn't work but they still tried and i'll give it that like they made something out of nothing here so it's that's true it's acceptable and i'll put it that way an attempt was made and
[00:40:21] you always got to give them credit for that exactly yeah um let's see so our billy our tech dweeb calls tucker again on the car radio and he is like hey everybody's out for you they're your name's plastered everywhere the bounty's on your the bat the bounty on your head is just as high so you're not going to have anywhere to run any everybody's going to turn you in again we've seen this story
[00:40:48] but tucker says to the reporter who he's got who she's the she's the witness so the one that was a report about this maldoings and so he's like look if we can survive the night i can get you in front of a judge tomorrow and this goes back to him still trying to follow his actual police protocol and doing all the due process in every which way it's just not actually played up as much as you
[00:41:15] want it to to really believe or not because it flies by you would never know it's there so they're sitting in the car at night and well we've skipped over part don't don't think it doesn't they go back to like there's a bar that all the cops hang out at oh he takes her back to a bar yep takes her to that bar looks like the bar from crime zone it does kind of but it's like so he's at this bar earlier and there's like strippers and stuff because of course there is and then carradine shoots
[00:41:45] the tv early on the bartender shows up with a baseball bat and is like you know the rules no shooting in here yeah and it's like oh sorry and he leaves him a wad of cash because i take care of it the guy leaves it's like everyone in there is armed and you pulled out a baseball bat but okay right um so anyway he goes back to the bar with her yeah and it's filled with the other cops who all want to take her in because she's worth a hundred grand and it's like what are you like this is like the most
[00:42:14] dumbest movie of move i've seen in a movie in ages it makes no sense i was reading into this a little bit thinking this is like the hotel from john wick where nobody can do anything except it's not but it's not it's not because they all pull the guns and stuff right so um yeah so anyway so what they do then is
[00:42:36] is they get out of there through you know chain of events and then they go to like her friend from the station i guess the woman who hired her or whatever i think is yeah who's who was killed earlier by by becker yep um for i we don't know why but i guess just because she's associated with with she's not helping yeah yeah so it goes back to but then so they go there and they find her body
[00:43:05] now i want to know this because they then well okay so then he hugs her because she's upset he's like i'm not going to let anything happen to you and he's like he pulls his gun and points it toward in general direction of the camera and says i'm going to kick a lot of ass along the way oh i love that line dude and then we cut away but when we come you know when we come back to the apartment like he's now gone off with some other body she wakes up in bed is shocked to find out that
[00:43:32] tucker's not there so are we supposed to know assume that they got it on last night oh yeah and okay but it's but that the only way that hat you know that happened was because of the next morning when she wakes up and he's gone and i'm just like what a weird way to insinuate a love scene that's true yeah i guess they could have shown them start to kiss or anything but then but the question i have is they're still in the apartment of her dead friend
[00:43:59] right like they never left there is that where they are they have to be yeah they have to be the dead friend apartment is the body so is it is the dead friends yeah is the dead friends still on the living room floor like they don't explain any of that they don't but i i appreciated this moment i'm glad you mentioned that bit i glazed over it but it is awesome because when she gets up in the morning and she gets out of bed and she walks over to the closet because she's wearing like a nightgown
[00:44:26] she puts a robe on and the robe is the priest robe from kung fu it's so good no and that's what i was like i was like this movie is perfect the david a prior thank you he loves carotty and he loves kung fu he gets it like that is the only reason that exists it's so funny it has the it's so good yeah i didn't get that but then she turns around and she finds the note that he's stuck in the lampshade
[00:44:53] over the over the breakfast table yeah it just says i i need to do this alone love don't come from love love tuck it's like it does say tuck it says love tuck it does and uh yeah and and in handwriting that was definitely not written by carotty and definitely by uh by an ad who's a woman yeah it was definitely a chick's handwriting but he's not david carotty it's way too nice that was
[00:45:20] not carotty and handwriting it was with the power glove and it also gives him really good handwriting skills like as an auto write feature i don't know man i i like this movie a lot more talking about it with you it's it's actually pretty good the more i think uh yeah i like talking about these scenes but man is and thank god this thing's only 84 minutes but it still took me a long time to watch this today so so the moment before that is what is getting is where they're in the car before they
[00:45:50] sleep together and they're sitting in the alley they're hiding out in darkness and everything slows down and you get a beat and that's when she says because she's like hey like starts asking him personal stuff and she's like do you have any family and he's just like no and then she says what about billy the tech tweed kid on the thing and then he does this comment how he's in a wheelchair and i didn't catch that until me neither and i was like okay so i was wondering if we so obviously
[00:46:19] they don't show it to us until before then because i just thought i missed it i was imagining maybe there was other scenes of him in a wheelchair and they cut it out or something because yeah she mentioned that and i was like he's not because at the at the end you see he's in a wheelchair finally right and and unlike mr no legs he doesn't have anything cool on it and for the guy who built the power glove he should have yeah come on like he could yeah ted volrath legendary korean war vet
[00:46:45] could put shotguns in his wheelchair this kid should be able to do something he should be rolling around looking like the silver bullet at this point i swear well and considering the way he's he ends because it's like he gets he's trying to do some hacking and then all of a sudden the notice comes in that he's being wanted for i think was it i think they flag him as treason too or maybe it's just yeah that's how they put the hit on him next yeah but seconds later someone's at the door and shoots him yeah
[00:47:12] and of course it's it's becker he comes around it's mr charminator but that's right and it's just like the worst hacker in the world well this is 1989 this is where true hackers yeah should have been able to disguise where he is at least my god do what you gotta do that's fast and uh we're we're getting a little off track because i i still want to go back to this moment where they sit in the car very easy to get off track in this movie the movie itself is off track but i'm trying
[00:47:40] to defend it here because you did ask a question and there is a moment where she asked well you don't have any family what about billy the kid in a wheelchair who we don't know was in a wheelchair but we're like sure yes and we find out that tucker says he was like i was in lapd 20 years ago and i think it doesn't mean he's been in lapd all the way up till this just 20 years ago he was in lapd
[00:48:04] and he says hey we went to a house my partner got shot and i returned fire and then when i looked up and turned the light on there was a kid with a bullet in his back and he was six years old and then tucker says i've been looking after him ever since so billy the tech weep is a person that tucker shot in lapd days and now he's looking up so that's his only family so it's like a kid to him yeah
[00:48:34] which which i get but still yeah it's take better care of him doesn't hold much water yeah you're right no and then he's holed up in some dark little room somewhere but apparently just randomly able to get to very easily yes this was specifically by becker and then a helicopter shows up they start shooting at him we get another chase i actually thought to myself at this moment so it's nighttime
[00:48:57] and i was like this movie actually figured out how to make a helicopter chase not fun like whenever there's a helicopter whenever there's a helicopter on screen i am glued to it i love this stuff and this was really uneventful nothing happens just like i was like okay well it goes on forever at him from the helicopter and he's trying to shoot back and it's like why are you guys bothering
[00:49:23] like yeah it's just like you know the helicopter's not going to get you a stable shot just just follow it but then the helicopter blows up and it it's actually one of the the main thugs yes on the ground with rocket launcher he shoots the helicopter out of the ground so it's so it's the it's like the main crime boss or whatever is also like a priest or something who we see at the very very beginning of the movie but he's also the police chief we learn is the twist at the end um no no well the police
[00:49:53] chief's the new bad guy and like he's got someone he's got the guy in his office who's got the collar oh right it makes him look like kind of like a priest except there's there's no it's just the white collar going around his neck there's no other other thing but he's like the the i guess the bad guy that um the police chief wants to take over from and he said i'm going to take 50 of your business he's like 50 like you know he'd give you like five or ten or whatever and then like becker kills his
[00:50:21] two goons that are with with them and um yeah so later on this is the only other time we see the guy yeah the priest is standing outside he just takes an rpg and blows up the helicopter he just kind of laughs and that's it and we never see the guy again no he's just there for that but that kicks off the reaction to our reporter and she starts sobbing and she's like everybody's dying because of me in that damn tape and tucker's like what do you mean that tape and then we find out that's why
[00:50:48] she had some tape that was going to put away and we don't really know too much about the tape but it was some form of evidence that could be used against these these mob guys is all it is so the word is out and now tucker is like okay i'll give you the girl and he sets up a trade and they go to a junkyard of course he doesn't bring her she stays at home and wears his robe from kung fu when he says love tuck
[00:51:14] on his letter but this this is the moment really of the movie because of course he doesn't bring the girl and then he just gets in a shootout as soon as he shows up in the junkyard with these guys and then yeah it's it's amazing how he's such a crack shot until this moment and then everyone shoots like they're part of the a-team yeah nobody's nobody's getting shot here and then
[00:51:37] he kills a bunch of them and then it's down to him and robert tessier or uh uh becker and well and the other bad guy adams is there too right uh and then he but he bails he like runs away literally runs away he's the police captain and he goes he goes running away and then it just leaves tucker and becker yeah which again i was like this is awesome like to see tesser on screen like this
[00:52:00] and they have these massive duke out scene and it goes and goes and goes and this this is the moment and they fight each other it's like they live kind of not as long or as entertaining but it's pretty long and they're trading blows tucker's almost dead on the ground and becker is winning and he's wailing on him and tucker holds his hand out with a little well box he's yeah but well tucker first
[00:52:27] punches like becker in the nuts or something right like this seems to be tucker's go-to move in this movie yeah the number of guys he punches in the nuts is isn't crazy but yeah these guys go back and forth and then yeah tucker's like pulls out this remote control and we should say it's a little black box it has a single orange button and what looks like an rca jack beside it and that's it and it's just an orange button and he presses it and he's like what are you gonna change the channel
[00:52:53] on me with that thing and uh but the meanwhile like tucker's the back hatch of his jeep pops open and then like the the black case that holds his glove suddenly pops open and there are latches on this thing right like yeah physical latches that somehow unlatch themselves from the outside from the outside yeah like they're the kind that you kind of screw and it clamps down and and they just pop
[00:53:21] and then the glove uh the case pops open and then suddenly the glove is airborne and it's a great shot of the air of the glove and you don't see the edge of it's just off camera so you can't tell that they've either got it on a on a pole or someone's arm i'm assuming it's a pole because it's relatively stable so it's probably on the same it's probably attached to the camera rig yep that's how i thought it was just kind of goes zooming along and he keeps pushing the button
[00:53:49] and it changes direction and he pushes the button and it changes direction again and it comes flying straight at becker and gongs him in the head but that's not the end of it because then becker gets up and then now the glove is just like full-on fist fighting him and it's back and then uppercuts him and it's back and forth i was howling dude like and then like i was i laughed out loud when i saw this david carradine just laying on the ground with this little box in his hand and this
[00:54:15] power literally pushing a single orange button oh my god so once he finishes with becker he releases the button and then the glove gives him the hovers it gives him the okay symbol and then flies back and flies back to the truck carradine laughs at this yes and yeah and when the
[00:54:39] when the glove lands it lands back in the truck and then we get this rotoscope animation of like electricity like flowing over the gloves if it's powering down and they're just blue lines and my problem with this is like a good example of this kind of effect everybody will say r2d2 getting electrocuted has that that look where it all goes over it's well done it's used pretty used nicely in uh big trouble a little china that's what i was gonna say that that is the gold standard for me
[00:55:08] is when the three storms when when lightning uses it because the thing is is when that was shot they actually used interactive lighting so they have a light on set that's going to be the same color as the lightning that's going to wrap around him and then they flicker it and pulse it and so you get all the spill over the character yes and then when you roto it yeah so interactive lights are extremely important when you do these kind of effects because you can't replicate the light the color
[00:55:36] temperature change you can just draw the lightning on and when you have a real light on set flickering and then the animator draws the lightning to match it's a whole package the thing about this movie there's none of that and then the power glove just sits there and these blue lines go over it and there's no interactive lighting or anything and it just looks extremely hokey like very yes not good at all but it uh may be long for better effects on that there's 10 minutes left in this movie now
[00:56:05] but i'm like well what's what's gonna happen because i was like we have 10 minutes but it's kind of over and billy finds out except except that adam's got away yeah and um and as as we've discussed backer's not dead yet so and and he he won't be for he's gonna come back a couple more times
[00:56:29] yeah he is yeah he's just straight up terminator in this movie by surprise so they show up to the police station tucker shows up to the police station everybody there is against him and the captain says right there and then on the floor of the station everybody's got their guns drawn on them they're like i'll give a hundred grand right now to somebody who shoots tucker and tucker's like waiting for billy
[00:56:56] to transmit this thing we don't know what it is because billy's hacked the system but also yeah billy's being attacked he's dying because they found billy becker found billy and billy's bleeding out but he slowly reaches and and tucker's kind of sweating this could be an intense moment it's just not directed and not shot well but the idea he's at gunpoint the guy's saying kill him i'll give you a hundred
[00:57:19] grand and tucker is like waiting for something to happen and it's not happening but billy crawls up he's covered in blood he hits enter and then immediately the red ticker changes again like the john wick style the ticker changes to the police chief's name because he's figured out all the crimes jason adams yes thank you so yeah and then it's like a hundred thousand wanted for murder and uh yeah and
[00:57:46] it but it's it's such a dumb in because then because then you know like tucker just kind of looks at those well guys and you know he picks his gun back up bolsters it and walks out and they all shoot it at adams tucker still wanted to like that hasn't been rescinded right and it's like that's another hundred grand in the room i think you're meant to believe that none of them really wanted to do it to him because he's been there for a long time and they didn't seem to want to but at the same like
[00:58:14] because even say at one point sorry sorry tucker a hundred grand's a lot it's a lot of money or something yeah and yeah but then it's just like it's dumb it's dumb but he walks out of the police station he's got his six-year holstered and the reporter chick just shows up and it's funny because like she's like standing outside the door and then she walks up and then she's like let's go
[00:58:40] and he's like what do you mean and she's like let's go anywhere you want to take me and then caridine's just like great and then like they saunter off to his jeep but surprise yes god yes there he is again becker he pops up like the terminator and then caridine quick draws on him shoots him then holsters his gun with a real nice spin it's a close-up puts into the thing and then
[00:59:08] they get in the car and then they drive off and this whole time i'm like man there's still six minutes what's going to go on somehow they burn all of that with him driving off it is one of the longest drive-offs into the sunset i've ever seen but it's a short street i don't know how they stretch the time out but yeah the credits um but we should point out like like tucker doesn't even know
[00:59:32] what's happened to billy um um marion hasn't shown her story or anything like nothing's resolved nothing's absolutely nothing's resolved but we just get this weird super chipper ending yeah except the funny thing is because it's david a prior this feels like the damn ending to the final sanction it's the same thing you're just like everything's a little too happy here but
[01:00:01] nobody cares and that's yeah we still we still need the final sanction uh detective tc co-detective tv series i'm telling you yeah i still like the idea that red heat is the prequel to that yes i mean how do you fix it though so oh dude you read it it needs a full rewrite full page one rewrite well
[01:00:27] we know the bones are good because we've seen it like said in in gone yeah we know this works yeah you you make it the gauntlet you but you you get to that within 10 or 15 minutes not 35 and um it may be i mean if you're if you're gonna have a power glove you'd best have a power glove there's no the futuristic component here is basically non-existent maybe it's the power glove there's nothing else their attempt at showing a hack hacking but nothing about this being said in the
[01:00:56] quote-unquote future is beneficial to it it doesn't feel like there's advancements in any weird way no i i think you could take this idea and spin it into a purge movie that revolves around a police station maybe well and it becomes assault on precinct uh well is it 13 yeah but you try to remember 13 is is
[01:01:22] kind of but they're all crooks right like this is police you know this is i suppose yeah like i i think the way that you could do this is you want these cops going out and taking people out for money and it maybe it falls into a purge thing i i really don't know it yeah i think i've had a lot more excitement re-talking about laughing about it with you than i did actually just watching it but it's oh
[01:01:48] yeah 100 like i had a hard time watching this movie but there were some moments that were just crazy enough that i liked them but at the same time like it's it's only when you realize as you're talking about it how the whole thing is just does not work no at all exactly it's not good it's like again we've seen the story a lot before that's something it's just surrounded by poor budget and
[01:02:16] lack of effort you say it's not good but you are looking up the blu-rays yeah i well speaking of that so physical media and availability i can find a single german release dvd for 26 standard def and for 38 i can get the same german release on a blu-ray that is called future force one and two
[01:02:43] and that's where i was like wait there's a sequel and then i realized the sequel is called future zone now future zone from 1990 once again directed by david prior starring david carradine and ted prior who was of course in the final sanction right so i was like okay i was like here we go maybe maybe maybe this is worth owning or maybe that movie's coming to you next week but it's it's 36
[01:03:12] yeah it won't be mine it's 36 for the blu-ray and i'm not jumping on it because it's it's bare bones the features on this disc include interactive menu wait for it photo gallery and a trailer so i was like yeah yeah that's not that's not in my wheelhouse for spending on that
[01:03:36] if it had a if it had a commentary on each in standby exactly so yeah but i'm not going to jump on it for such a stripper disc um paul o'brien cut this film and he's doing a real lot of tv right now he's still actively working but he was the assistant sound editor on fire in the sky which i thought was amazing um nice yeah filmed like fire in the sky we do like it filmed in and around la zero surprises
[01:04:06] there in some countries this movie is titled future cop and the poster is okay like it shows the robot hand there's nothing outstanding yeah it's it's still a painting so i appreciate that but i thought what's funny is the gun in his holster because you can see his right side of his body it's like an automatic and in the whole movie there's there's nothing but a revolver yeah and so he's got two of
[01:04:35] them too that's the best part he's got one of his waistband yeah yeah when when he's in the the chase scene that we've talked about so so much she's shooting a shotgun at him and then he takes his revolver and shoots at him till you because i'm like i'm counting bullets going oh he's out now and then i was wondering if they were he was going to keep shooting out nope click click he throws it beside him and he pulls another one out starts shooting it's like oh nice yeah uh it's just
[01:05:00] funny that like i was thinking about the poster and the way it's drawn it's just a a great example of the pure disconnect in these movies of like what is on the poster and what's happening versus what's actually in the movie most of the time these guys never got a chance to see the movie and they were just told to make something or paint something so yeah like yeah he's got a gun on his side and a
[01:05:21] robot hand or whatever but um anyways imdb yeah uh imdb is a 3.4 or 1300 which is yeah it's probably out there i think that's fine i had fun watching this yeah yeah it's it's not good but it at the same time kind of knows it's not letterbox is a bit higher that's a 2.3 which actually makes it a uh
[01:05:48] 5.2 um which is high because um but for 1900 i mean i mean i don't think that's high when the remote power glove scene exists it's pretty damn good but equivalent of a 5.2 at a 10 no i don't know it's it's this is this movie is like a three and a half there's so many movies maybe a four thanks
